Business Plans

business plan is a very important strategic tool for entrepreneurs. A good business plan not only helps entrepreneurs to focus on the specific steps necessary for them to make business ideas succeed, but it also helps them to achieve both their short-term and long-term objectives.

Why do I need a Business Plan?

A good friend of mine once told me about a holiday they once embarked on.  The only plan that they had for this holiday was the first town to visit.  After arriving there they would stay over till someone would told them about a good town relatively nearby to visit.  They would then drive there and stay over until someone would say again, hey I know a place that you need to see, and off they go.  Some of these places were really worth while to visit but some were not.

Although this might be a fun strategy for a holiday, we should not be doing business this way and yet we find ample business people that start off like this.  They have an idea and off they go, all exited and dressed up but all of a sudden they find them selves in Wrong street only to turn right into Jam street which is a dead-end.  By the time they get to us and we start asking them questions like what their profit margins are and how they did pricing we get blank stares.

A few months back we mentored an entrepreneur in creating his own business plan for his existing business. What a journey!  We started off with simple questions like, “what problem are you solving?” and “what is the solution you are providing?”.  He struggled answering these basic questions and it was a drag getting him to think about his business from a planning point of view.  We suspected that he was a little depressed because the cash flow monster were chasing him around and he did not see a real future for this business that he invested 2 years of his life in.

The good news is that after we assisted him thought a financial forecast model his eyes opened to the potential of his business.  He could be cash flow positive within 3 months if he followed the plan.  The plan also highlighted his biggest constraint, which he was able to resolve within one week.

We cannot stress enough the importance enough of creating a business plan.  We believe that the real value is in the process of thought and also seeing the projected numbers pan out.

We plan everything, our weddings, holidays, work days, etc., but why don’t we plan our Businesses?
